“I am not your Negro” is based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript, where he delves into the profiles, lives, and the assassination of three of his close friends – Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, and Martin Luther King Jr. Filmmaker Roul Peck takes up the challenge of finishing the unfinished manuscript “Remember this house”, by creating something radical, juxtaposing both the past and the present.

“I am not your Negro “retells the black history of America by assembling scattered images and archival clips. It explains the root cause of racial differences in the United States explicates the American mindset and explains the situation of the blacks using great philosophies like “The majority suppresses the minority”. It also questions the representation of Blacks in today’s America by connecting the past of the movement of civil rights to the present lives of the black people.

Samuel L. Johnson voices Baldwin in this documentary, whereas Baldwin himself appears in archival footages from speeches delivered in universities and appearances on “The Dick Cavett Show”.
