The movie is an erotic psychological thriller is an adaption of the novel Fingersmith by Welsh writer Sarah Waters. The setting is changed from the Victorian era to Korea under Japanese colonial rule. It revolves around a woman who is hired as a handmaiden named Sook-Hee (Kim Tae-ri) from a family of con artists. Taking on the name “Tamako” she enters the house of Japanese heiress named Lady Hideko (Kim Min-hee). She is been hired by a con man Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo) who plans to marry and steal the inheritance of Lady Hideko. Hideko and Fujiwara plan to flee off to Russia and steal Sook-hee’s identity, in order to escape Kouzuki. Unknown about Hideko’s plan, Sook-Hee grows closer to her and they both begin to have doubts about their respective deceptions. They experiment sexually with each other and fall in love. Later Hideko reveals her and Fujiwara’s plot to Sook-Hee and that’s when they conspire to betray Fujiwara and escape together. In the end, Sook-hee enlists her family to get fake passports and leave the country with Hideko. Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong) tortures Fujiwara in his cellar but Fujiwara tricks Kouzuki into making him light a cigarette which fills the room with deadly mercury gas which ends up killing them both.
